Gaining Experience through Virtual Reality Training
What’s best about VR is that it provides unique experiences. You can be placed in any environment and interact with an endless number of landscapes, objects, and situations. The only limit is the creative imagination of the designers.
Using virtual reality content to provide specific work ‘experience’ would be useful and advantageous, especially for apprentices, working on or around specialized equipment, performing infrequent tasks, and even just to teach simple safety procedures and awareness.
An apprentice electrician or novice technician would benefit from VR training since they might not have much knowledge or exposure to certain types of equipment. They may also be untrained in simple safety procedures like PPE selection, understanding approach boundaries, performing LOTO, and deciphering the information on a flash hazard label.
And no matter how much knowledge or experience one has, it is a good practice to be refreshed on various work procedures and safety processes; especially for those tasks that are not performed very often.
So using VR would allow a worker to be placed in any work environment, perform any number of tasks and work through all the necessary safety procedures-as often as necessary. Workers could even be subject to a virtual arc flash event! That would certainly be an ‘experience.’
